By providing participants with an example of what it is like to sleep out for the night, we are encouraging them to acutely understand the problem they’re helping to solve. By getting involved in the Corporate and Community Sleepout, business and community leaders can play an active role in the local community. This has added benefits;
- Connecting and networking with other members of the community
- Raising awareness within the wider community on the plight of those in Australia who do not have secure housing or accommodation
- Contributing to the overall development of the local community – intellectually, morally and emotionally
- Working side by side with Vinnies to raise funds to make a difference to those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness
- Contribute to a tangible project that assists people to break the cycle of homelessness
GOLD COAST CORPORATE AND COMMUNITY SLEEPOUT
Date: Thursday, 9th JULY 2015
Time: From 5.30 pm
Where: The Southport School grounds
Target Participants: 200
Fundraising Target: $150,000 (with 100% of funds raised going towards the Homeless Centre project)
WHERE WILL THE $$$ GO?
Vinnies on the Gold Coast is committed to establishing a Homeless Support Centre in the Southport region of the Gold Coast, to provide a one-stop shop to people who need support to find housing or sustain their housing. The centre will enable people to access a safe location where they can come and have a conversation about their circumstances and to access an individual case plan with qualified staff that is developed in consultation with them. Part of this plan may also include support and referral to other service providers.
The centre will also have showering and laundry facilities, a place to relax and access to other services, such as medical health, financial and social supports. Whilst these crisis type services will be offered, the primary goal will be to assist people to move out of homelessness and enter the housing system and maintain their tenancy for long term change.
Additionally, qualified staff will provide case management, support and referral services to people in the private rental market to enable them sustain their tenancies. The program will work closely with real estate agents to refer people who through changed circumstances or temporary hardship are struggling to maintain their tenancy. The program will provide an early intervention response preventing people from escalating into crisis or becoming homeless. The project is in the development stage, but funds raised from the 2014 Sleepout have been allocated to this project, and all funds raised from the 2015 event will be allocated to the project.
